Governance

The Mai Wiru Regional Stores Council Aboriginal Corporation (Mai Wiru) is an unfunded not for profit organisation which is registered as a charity by the Australian Taxation Office. It operates under the auspices of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities (Justice, Land and Other Matters) Act 1984. The role of Mai Wiru is to provide good quality, nutritious food to the communities of the APY Lands, SA and NT Regions at the lowest possible prices. Mai Wiru currently operates nine retail stores and an Indigenous hospitality business throughout SA, NT, and the APY Lands.

The Board recognises that with the growth of new stores and business interests, the organisation must continue to adapt the way it does business to achieve sustainability and good trading results.
In 2018 the Board restructured Mai Wiru to provide the organisation with personnel and policies that would allow it to grow and diversify into the future, ensuring a sustainable service which represents both interests and people of the communities it serves.

The Board appointed a new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and instructed him to examine, in detail, the operations of the organisation and revitalize the organisation and bring it to a position where it was able to carry out its mandate whilst ensuring it remained financially viable.

This has been achieved with the added benefit that MWRSCAC is now committed to best business practice systems and has sophisticated processes in place that have been designed to operate effectively in remote areas.
