Operating as a charity under the Australian Charities and Not-For-Profit Commission, Mai Wiru is an unfunded, not-for-profit Indigenous organisation registered under ORIC. Mai Wiru is fully-owned and controlled by Aboriginal people, and its board includes representatives from all communities on the APY Lands.
Through the ongoing consultation, monitoring, and new initiatives, Mai Wiru has been instrumental in bridging the ongoing issues of food security across Indigenous communities. Across all Mai Wiru Stores, prices are subsidised for fruit, vegetables, baby needs, and most meat products. All essential health foods such as fruit and vegetables are sold at landed cost.
Mai Wiru has a number of portfolios, which include: store management and consultancy, freight and logistics, administrative support through remote office hubs, recycling, community engagement – with active support across law and culture, sorry business, and community ‘thank you’ events.
Since 2021, Mai Wiru has also expanded its operations to wholesale distribution, through Palya Wholesale, a subsidiary company in operation since 2019. Palya distributes a variety of wholesale products (over 7000 lines) across the country, and supports the growth of the Mai Wiru Foundation.
As a positive impact across its Indigenous communities, Mai Wiru has grown continuously despite its lack of funding. The Organisation is no longer just about healthy stores, it has grown to help change the course of the future generations living within Indigenous communities through the support of its Benevolent fund. unfunded not-for-profit Indigenous Organisation, Wiru supports communities through a number of its projects and delivers a variety of services across its portfolio. At its foundation, it was established with a goal to improve the health and wellbeing of Indigenous people living on the APY Lands, by ensuring continuous access to nutritious food and essential items, at affordable prices.
